Time Warner Cable will raise rates for its Internet service by an average of $3 per month beginning on Aug. 9.
“Our Internet is obviously something that our customers are using more than ever,” said Time Warner Cable spokesperson Joli Plucknette-Farmen.
The heavy usage of the Internet, particularly for video games, has required more bandwidth — thus more maintenance and oversight, she added.
The company has a total of 600,000 customers in the Central New York region, which includes Binghamton, Elmira and Ithaca.
The increases subscribers will face depend on the packages of television, phone and Internet service they receive. For example, those who receive standard Internet service — offering up to 15 megabits per second (Mbps) download speed and up to 1 Mbps upload speed — will pay $54.99 a month, an increase from $51. That amount will change depending on the speed of the service purchased.
About 60 percent of Time Warner Cable customers in the Northeast region affected by the change have promotional packages that are lower than the regular packages. These customers will not be affected by the change for as long as the promotional rates remain.
Plucknette-Farmen said Time Warner Cable has no plans to increase TV and phone service rates. Since many plans are sold as bundles of TV, phone and Internet service, only a review of monthly bills will indicate the exact amount of the hike.
Time Warner Cable continually invests in its Internet network and infrastructure, Plucknette-Farmen said. In November 2012, standard Internet services had its speed bumped up 50 percent.
